Our time in Norway has come to an end. This morning was our last Norwegian breakfast and we’ve navigated our last Norwegian fjord. We’re now in Denmark, making our way back to Hamburg.
It was another dry day – cool at the start but warmed up as the day went on and we continued south. First stop was an impressive rockfall called Gloppedalsura – the resulting scree field is HUGE with boulders the size of cars and houses. It must have made one hell of a bang when it came down.
From there we followed the North Sea Road, enjoying our final chance to blast up and down the side of the fjords.
For a while I was first behind our lead rider, Pieter. Trying to stay with him pushes your limits – it’s almost cruel how he makes you think you are keeping up, but really you know that if he wanted to, he’d be gone in 15 seconds. Watching him tip into corners is borderline terrifying but also impressive.
We may not have gone all the way north to Nordkapp (the top of Norway) but today we visited the southern tip of the country at Lindesnes and saw the oldest lighthouse in Norway. There are also gun emplacement and magazine tunnels in the surrounding rock which was interesting to explore.
From there, we headed to Kristiansand where we boarded our last ferry (yay!) to Hirtshals in Denmark, where we are tonight. It’s incredible to compare the coastlines of Norway and Denmark where we are now – totally different! And Denmark is so flat in comparison.
Tomorrow is our final day and will be far less interesting than the last 18 days. 500+ kms, mostly on freeway to get us back to our starting point in Hamburg. Oh, and it’s probably going to be stinking hot and 30º+.
An interesting note to finish on… there was an 85% partial solar eclipse here in Scandinavia tonight just as we were arriving at the hotel. You couldn’t really see it with the naked eye (although the quality of the light was a bit different) but Dave managed to get an image of it on his camera. Very cool.
