In which we visit a canyon and drop some bikes.
Another glorious day in Namibia – just between you and me, I think it’s better than South Africa.
Today was the first day we’ve ridden with majority dirt. We had about 5 kms of Namibia’s best tarmac before we turned off onto the dirt. But honestly, the dirt roads here are amazing – well-graded, wide, and generally easy riding. They are better than a lot of the roads back in Victoria. ðŸ˜
Because they had some recent rain, there were sections of the road that had sand washed over that made for some squirrely moments. We also had a couple of sandy dry river crossings which we got through unscathed. Mostly… see the video.
The landscape here is reminiscent of parts of outback Australia, in particular, around the Flinders Ranges. Where we are staying tonight has boulder hills that look like places such as the Devil’s Marbles – probably the same geological processes made them both.
The Fish River Canyon itself is spectacular, like the Grand Canyon. Again, watch the video as words don’t do justice. Just spectacular.
From the main viewpoint, a few of us rode across to a second viewpoint. This was a bit more technical to ride up to it and man, I missed my WP Pro suspension from home. But no real troubles.
We then rode on to lunch at the Canyon Roadhouse. This was a very eclectic place and it reminded me of some of the quirky outback pubs and roadhouses I’ve seen back in Aus.
After lunch we backtracked a little, then turned off into the driveway for Fish Creek Resort. A little rougher than the main road but still good until another sandy dry creek bed just before the resort. It claimed a couple of riders – mostly because it was a bottleneck and they had to slow down.
The resort is luxurious and very cool. Some of the rooms are build around giant boulders and they protrude into the room. There are also heaps and heaps of Dassies (little rodents like a small capybara) our roaming over the lawns and rocks.
